Good questions - I could bodyswerve the issue and say "ask Barthes", it's his quote, but I won't.
I'll suggest a couple of potential answers here; perhaps 'self' knowledge or collective knowledge. I'm thinking of understanding that can develop, between a human being and his/her relationship to his/her environment (self-knowledge) and the shared understandings that then be developed with others within or outwith that environment (be it natural or social/cultural) as collective knowledge. It's true when it's true to you, or to 'them', or to 'us'. True might mean the best we have in terms of understanding at a particular time.
